MESEL is a brand new group that was created in December 2013 by two Turkish and one Greek musician that were destined and had the luck to meet and collaborate in Istanbul, Turkey.
It all started when famed baglama player Sinan Ayyıldız and upright bassist Apostolos Sideris, who has had an extensive career in Jazz music while in the States, met at Sinan’s recording studio through the recommendation of some common collaborators. Sinan Ayyıldız is shown as a leader musician at baglama playing especially in hand techniques. After Master degree at Turkish Music he led first instrumental music band that composed of different kind of instruments in Turkey named Etni-ka. He did a lot of movie soundtrack and album as a music director. He did a tour with Stereognosis Project in US. He played with Uzbek frame drum virtuoso Abbos Kasimov, Belgium beatbox champ Fatty K, United States beatbox champ Beat Rhino and famed contrbass player Miles Jay in these concerts also did an album with this band. He played his composition with KJ Sawka from Pendulum on that album. He is selected best musician on Modern Folk Music at Troy Awards in 2013. Apostolos Sideris earned master degree in performance being instructed by bass virtuoso John Patitucci in New York after his education at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then he has been freelancing around the States as well as abroad. He has performed with a wide array of musicians ranging from jazz masters such as Clarence Penn, Lionel Loueke, Rez Abbasi and Leo Genovese to world music sensations such as Ara Dinkjan, Savina Yannatou and Syrian vocal master Youssef Khasab. In addition to being a performer, he is also a devoted composer, writing in many different styles, ranging from Jazz to Middle Eastern and Latin influenced music. He had just moved to Istanbul from New York in search of new sounds rooted in the east, a result of his explorations of many oriental styles of music while in the States. The chemistry between the two musicians was instantly and mutually felt, to the degree that they both agreed that a serious project should be put together. Sinan Ayyildiz had the idea of adding a third member to the group, a young and up and coming Turkish vocalist and baglama player called İsmet Aydın. İsmet was to bring his deep knowledge of numerous singing styles of Anatolia paired with his training in several western types of music, such as classical and jazz. Once the core of the group was decided on, all three members worked and did extensive research putting together a repertoire of songs from Anatolia and its neighboring regions.
As a result, the group decided to focus on traditional songs taken from numerous traditions such as that of the Alevi people, the Pont and Laz Black Sea, the Kurdish East, the Greek Rums of Asian Minor, the Turkoman people of Azerbaijan and of Middle Anatolia. Soon, it was decided by all that it would be great to have guest musicians appear on some of the material when needed to express a regional style with more accuracy to the original feeling of the music. The first guest that was added to the roster of MESEL was Uğur Önür, a virtuoso of the Kemane. The group’s aim is to honor tradition but at the same time to modernize those traditions by adding elements from jazz and other styles of music. In other words the idea is to redefine and explore these traditions in a modern way without them losing their originality and folk element that gives them their soulfulness.
MESEL gave first concert in ITU Baglama Days at April 2014 and they had big interest after this concert. MESEL is planning to record their first album by the end of the summer. It is planned to make a US tour from Portland to New York after released the album. Hence, some concert organizations will occur in Turkey, Greece, Germany, Norway, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Lebanon and UAE after album released.
